There's no right way to grieve
Grief doesn't move in neat stages, and it doesn't follow a schedule. It can arrive in waves — sadness, numbness, anger, relief, guilt, and back again — sometimes long after others expect you to "be over it." Loss isn't only about death, either; it can follow a divorce, a diagnosis, a miscarriage, the loss of a pet, or a life that didn't turn out the way you'd hoped. However your grief shows up, it makes sense, and you don't have to carry it alone.
I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW, and for more than 30 years I've sat with people in some of the hardest moments of their lives. Grief counseling isn't about "getting over" your loss — it's about finding a way to carry it that lets you keep living and loving.
What grief can feel like
- Waves of sadness, longing, or emptiness
- Numbness or feeling disconnected from everything
- Anger, guilt, regret, or "what ifs"
- Trouble sleeping, eating, or concentrating
- Anxiety, restlessness, or physical heaviness
- Questioning meaning, faith, or what comes next
- Pulling away from others, even when you need them
How counseling helps
A space to grieve — and to heal
Therapy offers something everyday life often doesn't: unhurried space to feel what you feel, say the things you can't say elsewhere, and make sense of a world that's changed. My approach is warm and person-centered, and I draw on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and narrative and meaning-making work to help you honor the relationship or the life you lost. When grief becomes stuck or tangled with trauma, depression, or anxiety, we gently work through those knots too. There's no pressure to move on before you're ready — only support to move forward, carrying what matters with you.

Getting started
What to expect
We begin with a free 15-minute consultation — a gentle, no-pressure way to ask questions and see if we're a good fit. Your first full session is simply a conversation about your loss and how you're doing; there's no expectation to share more than you want to. We'll go entirely at your pace, in person in Grand Blanc or by secure telehealth, with daytime, evening, and weekend options. Most major insurance is accepted. See fees & insurance →
Good to know
Grief counseling: common questions
How long does grief last?
There's no set timeline and no deadline. Grief tends to come in waves that gradually soften, but it can resurface around anniversaries, holidays, and milestones. You're not doing it wrong if it's taking longer than you expected.
When should I consider grief counseling?
There's no requirement to be "bad enough." If grief feels stuck, overwhelming, or isolating, if it's interfering with daily life, or if you simply want support carrying it, counseling can help — early or years later.
Do you offer grief counseling by telehealth?
Yes. I see clients in person in Grand Blanc and by secure video across Michigan and 14 other states, whichever feels more comfortable.
Do you take insurance for grief counseling?
Yes — most major plans, including BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, and Medicaid. Self-pay and superbills for out-of-network reimbursement are also available. See fees & insurance →
