Finding a Therapist in Grand Blanc: What to Look For
By Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW · June 28, 2026 · 4 min read
Deciding to start therapy is a real step, and choosing the right person to work with shouldn't be the part that stops you. Here's what actually matters when you're looking for a therapist in the Grand Blanc area — and how to know you've found a good one.
Fit matters most — and it's something you can feel quickly
Research is clear that the strongest predictor of whether therapy works isn't a particular technique — it's the relationship: how safe, understood, and respected you feel. That's exactly why I offer a free 15-minute consultation. It's a no-pressure way to talk, ask questions, and notice how it feels to be heard before you commit to anything. You shouldn't have to guess whether a therapist is a good fit — you should get to find out first.
What to look for — and what you'll find here
When you're evaluating a therapist, these are the things worth checking:
- Experience with what you're facing. I work with adults and teens on anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, grief, and LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming care — the concerns people most often walk in with.
- Insurance that works for you. I accept most major plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, and Medicaid, with self-pay options and Good Faith Estimates so there are no surprises.
- A format that fits your life. In-person sessions in Grand Blanc and secure telehealth across Michigan, with evening and weekend availability.
- An approach explained in plain language. Compassionate, practical, and collaborative — no jargon, no judgment.
- A therapist who actually listens. You'll get a sense of that in the first conversation, which is exactly what the free consult is for.
A few realities specific to our area
For people in Grand Blanc, Flint, and the wider Genesee County area, two things are worth knowing. First, waitlists are common — many local practices can't see new clients quickly, so it's worth reaching out to someone with availability. Second, telehealth across Michigan widens your options considerably; you're not limited to whoever happens to have a local opening. I offer both, which means you can usually get started without a long wait.
You don't have to have it all figured out
You don't need to know exactly what's wrong or what you want to work on before reaching out. That's part of what therapy is for. The first step is simply a conversation.
If you're looking for a therapist in Grand Blanc — or anywhere in Michigan through telehealth — I'd welcome the chance to talk. You can see how I work, view fees & insurance, or request your free 15-minute consultation.
