What happened to you still matters — and healing is possible

Trauma isn't only the event; it's what the event left behind in your nervous system. Long after the danger has passed, the body can stay on guard — bracing, flinching, struggling to feel safe. That can show up as flashbacks and nightmares, or as something quieter: numbness, hypervigilance, trouble trusting, or feeling disconnected from yourself and the people you love. Whatever you experienced, it was not your fault, and what you're feeling now makes sense.

I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW. For two decades I served as Lead Psychotherapist at a nationally recognized behavioral health center, where I built specialized trauma groups, and I've spent 31+ years helping people move through trauma toward steadiness and hope. This work is done carefully, at your pace, in a space where you're always in control.

Signs trauma may be affecting you

  • Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares
  • Feeling constantly on guard, jumpy, or unable to relax
  • Avoiding people, places, or reminders of what happened
  • Numbness, detachment, or feeling cut off from yourself
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Trouble sleeping, irritability, or difficulty concentrating
  • Shame, guilt, or a sense that you're "different" now

How therapy helps

Safe, trauma-focused, and paced to you

Good trauma therapy never rushes. We begin by building safety, stability, and coping skills so you feel resourced before we approach anything painful — and we only go there when you're ready. I draw on trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), cognitive and exposure-based methods, mindfulness, and grounding skills to calm the body's alarm system, adapted to your story and your pace. The goal isn't to relive what happened; it's to help your mind and body finally recognize that the danger is over.

My style is warm, steady, and collaborative. You set the limits, and nothing happens that you haven't agreed to. See all therapy services →

Good to know

Trauma therapy: common questions

Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to come to trauma therapy?

No. You don't need a diagnosis or a single, obvious event. If something from your past is still affecting how you feel, sleep, or relate to others, that's reason enough to reach out.

Will I have to talk about the details of what happened?

Only when and if you're ready. Safe trauma therapy starts with stabilization and trust. We build coping and a sense of safety first, and we never move faster than you're comfortable with.

Do you offer trauma therapy by telehealth?

Yes. I see clients in person in Grand Blanc and by secure video across Michigan and 14 other states. Trauma-focused work can be done effectively in either setting.

Do you take insurance for trauma therapy?

Yes — most major plans, including BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, and Medicaid. Self-pay and superbills for out-of-network reimbursement are also available. See fees & insurance →
