Relationship Therapy for Individuals in Grand Blanc, Michigan
One-to-one work on recurring patterns, trust, and the fear that people eventually leave — in person in Grand Blanc or by secure video across Michigan and 14 other states.
This is individual work, not couples therapy
Sometimes the person who needs to be in the room is you, on your own. Maybe your partner won’t come. Maybe you’re not in a relationship right now and want to understand why the last three ended the same way. Maybe the relationship is fine and the problem is how much you brace for it not to be.
All of that is workable individually. If you and a partner both want to come, couples counseling is the better fit — but you don’t need anyone’s agreement to start looking at your own side of a pattern.
I’m Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW, and I’ve spent more than 30 years helping people understand what they bring into their relationships and what they can change about it.
How we work on it
Patterns are easier to see from outside them. We map what actually happens — what sets it off, what you do next, what you expect to happen, and what happens instead. Most people find their own behaviour makes a great deal of sense once the expectation underneath it is visible.
From there we work on the parts you can move: tolerating closeness without waiting for it to collapse, saying what you need without either swallowing it or detonating, distinguishing a real red flag from an old alarm going off. I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, schema-informed work on long-standing patterns, and trauma-focused approaches where earlier experiences are still driving things.
Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes. See fees & insurance →

Relationship therapy: common questions
Can I come without my partner?
Yes — that's what this page is about. Individual relationship work doesn't require your partner's participation or agreement. Plenty of people start here and never bring a partner in at all.
Is this the same as couples therapy?
No. In couples therapy the relationship is the client and both people are in the room. Here the work is yours: your patterns, your history, your side of the dynamic. If you both want to come, couples counseling is the better fit and I offer that too.
What if I'm not currently in a relationship?
That's often the best time to do this work. Without a live conflict to manage, there's room to look at what keeps happening and why — before the next relationship rather than during it.
Will you tell me whether to stay or go?
No. That decision is yours and it should be. What I can do is help you make it with a clear head instead of in the middle of an argument, and help you tell the difference between a relationship that's hard and one that's harmful.
If the pattern keeps repeating, it’s worth understanding
A free 15-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to ask questions and see whether this feels like the right fit.
