When the same conversation keeps going wrong

Families rarely come to therapy because they've stopped caring. They come because something isn't landing — a teenager who's gone quiet, a conflict that reignites every holiday, a household reorganising itself after a loss, an illness, a separation, or someone leaving home.

What often keeps a family stuck isn't any single person. It's the loop: one person's response triggers another's, and everyone ends up in the role they least want to play.

I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW. Family work is about making that loop visible and giving everyone a way out of it that doesn't require someone to lose.

What family sessions look like

We start with what each person is experiencing — which usually differs more than anyone expects. From there we look at the pattern between you and work on practical changes: clearer expectations, better repair after conflict, more room for people to say difficult things without the whole system reacting.

I draw on marital and family approaches, narrative work, and cognitive behavioral strategies where they help. Sessions are calm and structured. Nobody is put on trial.

Confidentiality in family work has some particular considerations, especially where an adolescent is involved. We'll talk through exactly how that works at the start so everyone knows where they stand. See fees & insurance →

Good to know

Family therapy: common questions

Does the whole family have to attend every session?

No. Who comes to a given session depends on what we're working on. Sometimes it's everyone, sometimes it's a parent pair, sometimes it's one parent and one child. We'll decide together as we go.

What ages do you work with in family sessions?

I work with clients age 12 and up, so family sessions generally involve adolescents and adults. If your child is younger than 12, I'm glad to help you find someone whose practice is a better fit.

Is family therapy about blaming the parents?

No. Family work looks at patterns rather than culprits. Most families get stuck because of how everyone responds to everyone else, not because one person is the problem — and that's usually a relief to hear out loud.

Can we do family sessions by video?

Yes, and it can be easier when family members live in different places or keep different schedules. In-person sessions in Grand Blanc are also available.
