Being a teenager is genuinely harder than it looks

Adolescence has always been demanding. It is measurably more so now — academic pressure, social media, a constant stream of bad news, and a social world that never quite switches off. Many teenagers manage all of it while giving very little away at home.

Parents often notice something before they can name it: a kid who's more withdrawn, more irritable, sleeping oddly, dropping things they used to care about, or saying they're fine in a way that doesn't sound fine.

I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW. I've worked with adolescents across most of my career, including in adolescent treatment and crisis programs, and I take them seriously as people rather than as problems to be managed.

How I work with teenagers

The first job is that your teen doesn't dread coming. I'm direct, unhurried, and not easily shocked, and I don't lecture. Once someone feels reasonably safe, the real conversation tends to start on its own.

From there we work on what's actually bothering them — anxious thinking, low mood, self-esteem, friendships, identity, family conflict, school stress — using approaches including CBT, ACT, mindfulness, and trauma-informed work when it's relevant, adjusted to their age and what they'll actually engage with.

Parents aren't shut out. We agree at the outset how communication will work, and I'll be clear with both of you about what I can and can't share. See all therapy services →

Teen therapy: common questions

What ages do you work with?

Age 12 and up. For younger children, I'm glad to point you toward a clinician whose practice is a better fit.

Will you tell me what my teen says?

Therapy works better when a young person can speak freely, and it also needs to be safe. At the start we go over exactly what stays between your teen and me, what I would share with you, and the situations where I am required to speak up — including any serious risk of harm. Everyone hears those ground rules together so there are no surprises later.

What if my teen doesn't want to come?

That's common and it isn't a dealbreaker. Plenty of teenagers arrive skeptical. I don't push. The first session is mostly about them deciding whether this feels tolerable — and often that's enough to get started.

Do you meet with parents too?

Usually yes, in some form. That might be a check-in with you, occasional joint sessions, or family sessions alongside individual work. What fits depends on your teen's age and what's going on.

Wondering whether your teen could use support?

A free 15-minute consultation is a straightforward way to talk it through — no commitment, and no pressure on your teen.
