Something happens in a group that doesn't happen one-to-one

Individual therapy is a conversation with someone trained to help. Group therapy adds something different: other people who recognize what you're describing, because they've lived a version of it.

For a lot of people that recognition does work no amount of reassurance can. It's harder to believe you're uniquely broken while sitting in a room with people who clearly aren't, describing the same thing you feel.

I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW. During roughly two decades as Lead Psychotherapist at a hospital-based behavioral health center I built and ran intensive outpatient programming and specialized trauma groups, and group work has been part of my practice ever since.

How groups are run

Groups here are structured and skills-based rather than open-ended. There's a focus, a format, and a facilitator keeping it safe and on track. You will not be dropped into an unstructured room and left to fend for yourself.

Before joining, we meet individually to talk about what you're hoping for and whether the group is a reasonable fit — for you and for the group. Ground rules, confidentiality, and what to expect are covered before your first session.

Schedule and structure

Groups are for adults 18 and older and meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., running for four weeks. Members attend all three days, so a full course is twelve sessions across a month — about four and a half hours a week.

That pace is deliberate. A time-limited group with a defined end date and frequent contact holds momentum in a way a once-a-week open group often can't. You know going in what you are committing to and when it finishes.

Good to know

Group therapy: common questions

Is group therapy open to teenagers?

No — groups are for adults 18 and older. I do work with clients age 12 and up in other formats, so if you're looking for support for a teenager, individual teen therapy or family therapy is the place to start.

Do I have to talk in group?

Not before you're ready. Most people spend early sessions mainly listening, and that's a normal way to start. Groups are structured so that nobody is put on the spot.

Is what I say in group confidential?

I'm bound by the same professional confidentiality that applies in individual therapy. Group members are also asked to agree to keep what's shared inside the room — but because a group involves other people, confidentiality can't be guaranteed the way it can one-to-one. We go over this carefully before you join.

Can I do group therapy and individual therapy at the same time?

Often yes, and for some people the combination works better than either alone. We can talk about whether that makes sense for you.

What groups are running right now?

Groups run Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., in four-week blocks. Start dates depend on when a new block is forming and whether the fit is right, so get in touch and I'll tell you what's next.
