When your mind won't take "enough" for an answer

OCD is more than being neat or organized. It's a cycle: an unwanted, intrusive thought sparks intense anxiety, and a behavior or mental ritual brings brief relief — which teaches the brain to repeat the loop. The thoughts often feel shameful or frightening and aren't a reflection of who you are or what you want. OCD is exhausting, isolating, and very treatable.

I'm Kevin B. Stachowiak, MSW, LMSW, and I've spent more than 30 years helping people break free from cycles like this. Together we'll loosen OCD's grip so you can spend your energy on your life instead of your fears.

Signs you might recognize

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause distress
  • Repeated checking, washing, counting, or arranging
  • Mental rituals — reviewing, praying, or repeating phrases to feel "safe"
  • Seeking reassurance over and over
  • Avoiding situations that might trigger the thoughts
  • Knowing the fear may be irrational but feeling unable to stop

How therapy helps

ERP — the gold standard for OCD

The most effective treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy. ERP gently and gradually helps you face what triggers the obsessions while resisting the compulsion, so your brain learns the anxiety will pass on its own — without the ritual. I pair ERP with CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness to ease the distress and help you relate to intrusive thoughts differently. Every exposure is planned with you, at a pace you agree to; nothing is ever sprung on you.

My style is warm, steady, and collaborative — you're always in the driver's seat. See all therapy services →

Good to know

OCD therapy: common questions

Is it really OCD, or am I just particular?

Liking things tidy isn't OCD. OCD involves unwanted, distressing thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) done to relieve that distress — and they take up real time or get in the way of life. If that sounds familiar, therapy can help.

What is ERP, and is it scary?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold-standard therapy for OCD. It gently and gradually helps you face triggers without doing the compulsion, so the anxiety fades on its own. We go at your pace, with your consent at every step — it's challenging, but never something done to you.

Do you offer OCD therapy by telehealth?

Yes. I see clients in person in Grand Blanc and by secure video across Michigan and 14 other states. ERP works well over telehealth, often in your own environment where triggers actually occur.

Do you take insurance for OCD therapy?

Yes — most major plans, including BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, and Medicaid. Self-pay and superbills for out-of-network reimbursement are also available. See fees & insurance →

A note on intrusive thoughts: distressing thoughts about harm are a common OCD symptom — they reflect fear, not intent or desire. If you're ever in crisis or worried about your safety, this site isn't for emergencies: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
